OPB350: Liquid sensor for critical medical applications

TT Electronics offers intelligent and reliable optoelectronic sensors for critical applications in the field of medical technology. With the OPB350 series of liquid sensors from OPTEK Technology, medical device manufacturers can detect a range of conditions. These range from 'tubing absent', 'tubing present', 'fluid in tubing', 'bubbles in tubing' to 'what type of fluid' (e.g. pure water, saline, dialysate fluid or blood) is flowing through the tubing. It is also possible to determine the hematocrit value. An example of an application for OPB350 is haemodialysis - the most common method for treating advanced and permanent kidney failure.

OPB350 consists of an LED and a photo sensor and detects the different conditions based on the amount of light transmitted. Interpretation of the signals coming from OPB350 is possible by connecting a comparator or simply feeding the results into a microprocessor. The OPB350L series has connectors designed for direct mounting on PCB boards. For remote mounting, the OPB350W series is available with 26 AWG wires. The OPB350 liquid sensors are designed for use with clear plastic tubing with outer diameters of 1/16" [1.6 mm], 1/8" [3.2 mm], 3/16" [4.8 mm] and 1/4" [6.3 mm]. Hose sizes in between or below 1/16" can be adapted with an adapter. Sizes over 1/4" [6.35mm] require a custom solution.
